Operation Imam Mahdi “May God Hasten His Appearance”
Operation Imam Mahdi “ May God Hasten His Appearance” was conducted in two stages (17 March 1981 and 21 May 1981) with the aim of pushing the enemy back from Susangerd and its surrounding areas, and Jahad-e Sazandegi also participated in it.
In the early years of the imposed war, it became clear that it was not possible to stand against the invading Ba' athist army and push it back using the established method of conventional warfare. For this reason, the war commanders designed unconventional operations, and the first operational step based on the Imam Mahdi plan was carried out by Martyr Hassan Bagheri. In the first stage, at 7:30 a. m. on 17 March 1981 (26 Esfand 1359), Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps forces attacked the enemy forces west of Susangerd from four axes with 200 personnel and conventional weapons and RPG-7s. By destroying one enemy tank battalion and one mechanized battalion, the friendly forces achieved an initial success; however, because of insufficient experience and the lack of replacement forces to consolidate the liberated positions, after two days the Iraqi Army returned to its previous positions. At this stage, 168 enemy personnel were killed or wounded, and 13 IRGC personnel were martyred.
The second stage of the operation began at 4:00 a. m. on 21 May 1981 (31 Ordibehesht) in the Allah-Akbar hills and the Shahitiyah area. Army artillery shelled Iraqi positions, and the friendly forces immediately launched their attack. The combat continued until noon that day, and parts of the area were liberated. That afternoon, enemy forces west of the Allah-Akbar heights prepared for a counterattack. Under these circumstances, holding Allah-Akbar Hill was of vital importance to the combatants, and the friendly forces were able to resist the enemy' s heavy counterattack. Combatants from Martyr Chamran' s Irregular Warfare Group also attacked to seize Shahitiyah Hill and captured it. Ultimately, the operation ended on 26 May 1981 (5 Khordad 1360).[1]
In this operation, Jahad-e Sazandegi, acting alongside the combat forces, in addition to supporting the combatants, constructed an operational road to facilitate the movement of machinery and military equipment toward the Allah-Akbar axes north of Susangerd, as well as several earthworks for the deployment of forces.[2]
