Yaqoub Ahmadbeigi (1950–1985) served as the Deputy Commander of the 3rd Brigade of the 88th Division in Zahedan.
Born on June 26, 1959, in the village of Qaleh Jafar Beig, in the district of Tuyserkan, Ahmadbeigi completed his primary education in Shush before moving with his family to Tehran. After high school, having consulted religious scholars, he enrolled in the Officers' Academy. Although many army regulations clashed with his beliefs, he could find like-minded individuals who were ready to fight against the Pahlavi regime- such as Yousef Kolahdooz (martyred in 1981), Mostafa Aqarebparast (martyred in 1981), and Dr. Ayat (martyred in 1981). During the popular struggle against the regime, he served as a liaison between the Air Force and Ground Force personnel and contributed to establishing a prayer room at the Military Academy in 1970. In 1972, he graduated in Military Science and Technology with the rank of Second Lieutenant and was deployed to Shiraz, then Qazvin, and later to Hamedan. Four years later, he tied the knot.
Ahmadbeigi regularly met with Ayatollah Seyyed Asadollah Madani (martyred in 1981) in Hamedan, seeking his guidance on various issues. During this time, Imam Khomeini (ra) ordered soldiers and military officers to desert the barracks. After consulting with Ayatollah Madani, Yaqoub Ahmadbeigi stayed at the barracks to maintain control.
A few months later, he was assigned by the army to serve at Imam Khomeini's office in Qom. Subsequently, the then-commander of the Military Academy, Mousa Namjoo (martyred in 1981), asked him to return to the Academy where he became a battalion commander. In 1979, his first daughter was born. Following the outbreak of the Iran-Iraq War in September 1980, Ahmadbeigi persistently asked the Commander of the Military Academy to send him to the frontlines. However, Namjoo believed he would be more useful at the academy than on the battlefield. After regular office hours, Ahmadbeigi would stay at the academy for extended periods to help the students.
In 1982, he was transferred to the 88th Division in Zahedan. After obtaining the necessary approvals, he served for eight months in the operational areas of Piranshahr. During the same year, his second daughter was born. The following year, he was transferred to Zahedan and then to Iranshahr.
In 1984, Ahmadbeigi was sent on a mission abroad. Upon returning from the mission, he was appointed commander of the Salman Combat Group and deputy commander of the 3rd Brigade of the division.
During the Iraqi attack aimed at capturing the 402 Heights outpost in the Sumar region, Ahmadbeigi was on leave. However, upon learning about the situation in the area, he rushed to the frontlines to assist the brigade commander in reclaiming the outpost. On July 22, 1985, during this operation, he was hit in the shoulder by shrapnel from a mortar.
He also served as the operational commander during the liberation of the Kalehqandi Heights. Along with a few others, Ahmadbeigi embarked on reconnaissance missions on the frontlines for four consecutive days. The Iranian forces had decided to destroy the enemy's bunkers by continuously firing heavy shells before conducting the main operation.
On the morning of Friday, October 25, 1985, Yaqoub Ahmadbeigi, accompanied by some other military officers, went to the frontline for shelling duties. At noon, several tank shells hit their bunker causing the RPGs inside to explode. As a result, Ahmadbeigi and his accompanying officers were all martyred.[1]
